Thailand: IFRC Secretary General calls for community health workers to be placed at heart of public health efforts

Bangkok/Geneva, 11 March 2016 – The Secretary General of the IFRC, Elhadj As Sy, has renewed his call for more emphasis to be placed on the role of community health workers and volunteers in responding to public health epidemics and other health emergencies.

“Community-based volunteers have a critical role to play in responding to disease outbreaks. The fact that they are already present in communities means they are uniquely placed to raise the alarm and provide early interventions,” said Mr Sy.

“However, their value goes well beyond proximity. They are also able to provide tailored, and culturally appropriate services, bridging the gaps that often exist between health systems and vulnerable communities. They can also support communities to to take steps to reduce the health risks they face,” he said.

Mr Sy was in Bangkok to take part in the International Conference on the Implementation of the Health Aspects of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, an event co-organized by the Thai Government, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

During the two-day event, Mr Sy cited the important role that is being played by community-based volunteers, including Red Cross volunteers in response to the Ebola Zika outbreak in West Africa and the Americas respectively. Earlier this week the IFRC launched an international appeal to bolster Zika response efforts, and to fund preparedness measures in Asia Pacific, Africa, the Middle East and North Africa and Europe.

The Secretary General met with senior government officials during his visit, commending the Thai Government for their leadership in the implementation of the Sendai Framework. He discussed IFRC’s collaboration within Thailand and the wider ASEAN community on a range of humanitarian issues.

He also met with Phan Wannamethee, the Secretary General of the Thai Red Cross Society, and visited a number of Thai Red Cross projects in Bangkok. Mr Sy noted the critical role that Thai Red Cross plays in responding to the vulnerabilities of diverse communities across the country.

“The Red Cross is at the forefront of responding to and preparing for disasters in Thailand and across the region. It plays a key role in managing disease outbreaks and other health emergencies,” Mr Sy said. “It also provides services and support to groups that are often isolated and marginalized, including through its HIV and AIDS work with men who have sex with men and the transgender community. Wherever there is a need, the Thai Red Cross is there.”

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the worlds largest volunteer-based humanitarian network, reaching 150 million people each year through its 190 member National Societies. Together, IFRC acts before, during and after disasters and health emergencies to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people. It does so with impartiality as to nationality, race, gender, religious beliefs, class and political opinions. For more information, please visit www.ifrc.org.
